FIFA U-20 WWC: How Falconets’ dream faded against Colombia

Nigeria's Falconets were eliminated from the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their quarter-final match on Sunday. The match took place at Stadion Miejski in Łódź, Poland. The Nigerian team had begun their tournament poorly, suffering a 2-0 loss to Spain in their opening Group F game, followed by a goalless draw against China.

However, they bounced back by thrashing New Caledonia 10-1, which secured their place in the knockout rounds. In the Round of 16, the Falconets defeated England 3-0, with Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Akekoromowei, and Mercy Mamudu scoring the goals. They had the upper hand against Colombia, creating more dangerous chances. Akekoromowei nearly put Nigeria ahead in the 19th minute, only for her shot to hit the crossbar.

Adeshina also forced Colombian goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo into an excellent save just before halftime. The match turned in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was sent off for a foul on Samantha Rodriguez, reviewed by VAR. With 10 players, Nigeria continued to press but Colombia began to find space on the counter. In stoppage time, Valerin Loboa capitalized on a rebound to score the equalizer, sending Colombia through to the semi-finals.

Falconets' coach Isma'il Musa attributed their elimination to their inability to convert chances created and the impact of Colombia's late red card. Journalist Femi Fabunmi suggested the team's downfall was due to a loss of concentration and defensive errors in the final minutes of extra time. The tournament will conclude with semi-finals on Wednesday, featuring Spain vs Italy and Colombia vs North Korea.
