FAA Equipment Outage Triggers Major Flight Disruptions Across US Northeast, Ground Stops Hit JFK, LaGuardia & Newark Airports

New York's John F Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport faced ground stops on Monday due to an equipment outage at the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This disruption impacted flights within and arriving at Northeast US airports. Flightradar24 reported that JFK and LaGuardia were added to the list of airports where flights were being held at their origin due to the FAA equipment issue.

The airports currently affected include JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Teterboro, Philadelphia, Westchester County Airport, and EWR. Throughout the day, there were significant disruptions at Newark, with 107 diversions to 34 different airports involving 25 airlines. United Airlines was the most affected, with 70 diversions. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford explained that the issue stemmed from a circuit failure at the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control facility, causing the loss of radio and radar equipment.

Additionally, a damaged fibre-optic backup system in New Jersey added to the complications. By 6 pm, telecommunications lines were repaired, and airport operations in the Northeast were expected to resume, although residual delays were anticipated. FAA Administrator Bedford criticized the current infrastructure, stating that the network design needed a significant overhaul to prevent future failures.
