‘Enough is enough’: Mohammedwadi residents seek curbs on heavy vehicles

On Monday evening, a tragic accident occurred in Mohammedwadi, Pune, when a dumper truck struck a motorcycle from behind, killing the rider and injuring his friend. The incident has sparked outrage among the residents, who are demanding stricter regulations on the movement of heavy vehicles in the NIBM, Mohammedwadi, Undri and Wanowrie areas.

The accident is not an isolated case, as two people were killed in similar accidents involving water tankers just four months ago. Deepa Cheema, co-founder of the Mohammedwadi Undri Residents Welfare and Development Foundation, highlighted the need for traffic discipline and improved road infrastructure. She suggested restricting heavy vehicle movement to night hours, enforcing helmet use, and deploying police volunteers to monitor traffic violations.

Nitin Deshpande, a local resident, pointed out the poor quality of road infrastructure and called for action against unpaved roads, narrow pathways, and inadequate emergency response. Construction activity in the area has led to frequent movement of heavy vehicles, causing concern among residents like Rohan Gaikwad, who urged the Pune Municipal Corporation to complete pending road-widening work.
