Driving license in Qatar: List of requirements, conditions and fees

In Doha, Qatar, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has recently provided details on the process for obtaining and renewing driving licenses for various types of vehicles, as per directives approved by the General Directorate of Traffic.

To apply for a driving license, applicants are required to present several key documents. These include proof of identity, a personal photograph, a medical examination encompassing an eye test and a confirmation of no disabilities that could impact driving, and a valid residence permit for residents.

Age restrictions apply to the types of licenses sought. Individuals must be at least 18 years old to acquire licenses for motorcycles, light vehicles, and licenses for those with special needs, as well as the learner's permit associated with these categories. Those aiming for licenses for heavy vehicles, machinery or equipment, and public transport must meet a higher age threshold, starting at 21 years old.

Fees for issuing and renewing licenses vary depending on the vehicle category. For motorcycles, the fee is QR300 for Qatari citizens and QR150 for non-Qatari residents. Light vehicle licenses cost QR500 for Qatari citizens and QR250 for non-Qatari residents. Heavy vehicle licenses, applicable to buses, medium trucks, and tractor-trailers, charge QR600 for Qatari citizens and QR300 for non-Qatari residents.

Machinery or equipment licenses, which cover equipment like excavators, cranes, loaders, and forklifts, also cost QR600 for Qatari citizens and QR300 for non-Qatari residents.

Applicants must provide a medical fitness certificate from an authority designated by the licensing authority, confirming sufficient eyesight and physical fitness, with no disabilities or medical conditions that would hinder driving. For those seeking licenses for individuals with special needs, an additional medical examination suited to their condition is necessary, along with a corresponding medical certificate. All applicants are also required to pass a technical driving test, covering traffic rules and road etiquette.

The Ministry has identified nine authorized driving schools in Qatar: Al Raya Driving School, Gulf Driving School, Doha Driving Academy, Qatar Modern Driving School, United Driving School, Al Khebra Driving School, Al Hasba Driving School, Karwa Driving School, and Dalla Driving School.

Violations under Law No. 5 of 2015 can result in penalties, including imprisonment ranging from one month to three years, fines between QR10,000 and QR50,000, or either penalty alone. These violations include operating a motor vehicle on the road without a valid license, as outlined in Article 29, and allowing an unlicensed individual to drive a vehicle, as stipulated in Article 38.
