Dr. Nyaaba calls for sustainable transport and organic inputs to support farmers

Dr. Charles Nyaaba, a former Director of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFA), is advocating for sustainable transport and organic inputs to assist farmers in overcoming production challenges. Inadequate transportation from farms to markets often leaves farmers stranded with their produce, especially in areas where reliable transport is scarce.

During the Ecobank-JoyBusiness Financial Dialogue Series, Dr. Nyaaba proposed innovative transport solutions, such as battery-powered vehicles, to enhance the movement of farm produce from production centers to markets. He also highlighted the potential of rechargeable battery-powered yards as an example of how alternative energy solutions can benefit agricultural communities.

Improving transport infrastructure and systems at the farm-gate level could enable farmers to more efficiently move their produce to nearby markets and connect more effectively with consumers. Dr. Nyaaba also expressed concerns about farmers' continued reliance on chemical pesticides and fertilizers. While organic alternatives are becoming more available, challenges persist regarding quality, accessibility, and adoption among farmers.

He emphasized the need for better support in developing and distributing high-quality organic fertilizers and pesticides, as well as financing mechanisms to make these products more accessible to smallholder farmers.

Dr. Nyaaba stressed the importance of a broader approach to green financing, which should encompass not only renewable energy for agricultural production but also sustainable transportation and environmentally friendly farm inputs. By implementing these interventions, he believes that the environmental impact of agriculture can be reduced, while simultaneously improving farmers' ability to transport their produce, lower production costs, and gain better access to markets.
