US President Donald Trump reported that officials from the United States and Iran met with each other at the sidelines of the UN General Debate in New York. According to Trump, the conversation went very well and lasted for three hours. During his speech to reporters, Trump did not disclose the names of all the participants in the meeting.

The last direct talks between US and Iranian representatives took place in Switzerland in June. Trump's source suggested that Steve Witkoff, who served as US chief negotiator, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner attended the New York meeting. Witkoff later stated he felt very well after the meeting. Specific information about Iranian participants was not provided by Trump.

He hinted at an upcoming further meeting but did not give any details. Speculation had arisen before the UN General Assembly about whether Trump might meet with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was also set to speak in New York. However, the US government had not explicitly commented on this. For some time now, the fronts of the Iran war have been hardened.

Nonetheless, Iran recently indicated willingness to end the war with the US based on the framework agreement reached in June. However, this did not lead to a resolution of the conflict and quickly collapsed due to ongoing tensions. The key sticking point between Washington and Tehran currently revolves around control of the Hormuz Strait, crucial for international oil trade.

During his UN speech, Trump presented a far-reaching decision: either a deal allowing Iran to regain economic strength, or the destruction of the Islamic Republic to prevent it from ever again killing people and destroying countries. If Iran chose war, the president warned, the republic would be "doomed, with no chance of survival and no hope for future greatness or future generations."

The Iran war has now been ongoing for nearly seven months and has also affected the Gulf states. Several host countries have US military bases and have themselves been affected by Iranian attacks and the consequences of the war. The US justified its attacks since February 28th with the argument that Iran could never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon.

Trump had initially planned to limit the war to a few weeks, but the conflict dragged on nonetheless. Temporary ceasefires have arisen and been broken repeatedly. Additional pressure comes from the escalation in Yemen, where the Iran-supported Houthi militia made a lightning offensive last week to gain access to the critical Bab al-Mandab strait at the entrance to the Red Sea.

Saudi Arabia is currently seeking supporters in its fight against the militia. According to the "New York Times," Trump had initially wanted to support Saudi Arabia in the fight against the militia but then cancelled the plan at short notice.
