Commodore's forgotten Amiga Unix gets a modern revival

Commodore's Amiga Unix, known as Amix, has been given a modern revival by a group of hackers. Utilizing AI for reverse engineering, the team has updated the vintage operating system, making it compatible with newer Amiga hardware like those with 68040 and 68060 processors. The update includes a modified kernel, support for Zorro III cards and peripherals not available in the original release, and a new package manager, apkg, for fetching software over the internet.

Amix was a niche product, primarily marketed as a Unix workstation for high-end Amiga models, but it holds historical significance as it emerged as high-end home computers started to compete with lower-end workstations. While NetBSD offers a more modern alternative, the revival of Amix showcases the enduring appeal of the Commodore Amiga and its capability to run advanced Unix systems.
