Calgary city council makes symbolic vote in support of remaining in Canada

Calgary city council unanimously affirmed its commitment to remaining a part of a united Canada. Councillors declared that the city is a “vital part of Alberta and Canada”, despite one councillor voting against the motion. Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas, who sponsored the motion, expressed concerns that the debate surrounding Alberta's potential separation from Canada was negatively impacting the city's economic interests.

Farkas warned that a vote in favor of separation would effectively make Alberta a part of the United States. The vote comes as Albertans prepare to decide on whether to remain in Canada or hold a second referendum on potential separation on October 19. Edmonton's city council had taken a similar stance in July, unanimously voting to affirm Alberta's place within Canada.
