Außenhandel: EU und Philippinen einigen sich auf Freihandelsabkommen

Brussels - The European Union and the Philippines have reportedly reached an agreement on a free trade agreement, according to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The deal, which will involve further negotiations on certain points, aims to reduce tariffs on both sides and enhance market access, the EU Commission announced.

With a population of 113 million, the Philippines is seen as a significant market for EU exporters, particularly in areas such as machinery, transportation, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. European companies are expected to benefit from reduced tariffs on products like pork from the EU. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic stated that they have agreed to liberalize over 94% of tariff positions that cover more than 97% of goods on both sides.

This move is expected to provide opportunities for many European businesses, including farmers, as well as promote stronger and more diversified supply chains at a time when resilience has become a strategic priority. Semiconductor manufacturing is a notable example. The agreement also sends a clear message that the EU is enhancing its commitment in the Indo-Pacific region.
