Arizona State report shows training plan not submitted before hockey player’s collapse

On Tuesday, Arizona State released a preliminary report stating that coaches were present during a player's collapse during an outdoor workout, but training plans were not submitted to the school. The incident occurred on August 20 when Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old player, collapsed and remains hospitalized with exertional heat stroke. The stroke reduced oxygen flow to his brain, and doctors say he is unlikely to recover.

The university is conducting an investigation, and the report noted that coaches had requested permission for Timothy Ziesel, a former Green Beret, to speak with the team during a three-day event. However, they did not submit a training plan to ASU's strength and conditioning coaches. James Rund, ASU's senior vice president of educational outreach and student services, said the university is focused on finding ways to improve student-athletes' well-being.

They are also planning to work with a multi-disciplinary panel of experts to provide recommendations regarding best practices for outdoor athletic activities.

Family attorney Rob Carey criticized the university, saying nobody has been named, suspended, or fired for violating policies, and a committee is not sufficient to investigate the incident. He compared the event to a "punishment workout," where players missed counts and had to repeat the exercise. The workout took place at Sun Angel Stadium, with temperatures ranging from 86 to 89 degrees and humidity between 51% and 46%. All participants had been medically cleared before the workout.
