Arab mediators push for U.S.-Iran meeting at U.N. to de-escalate crisis

Arab nations are facilitating discussions between the U.S. and Iran, with the aim of arranging a high-level meeting during the UN General Assembly to de-escalate the ongoing crisis, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. The potential meeting comes as the conflict has persisted for over six months without any resolution.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo indicated on Tuesday that President Trump is open to a meeting with Iranian officials in New York, emphasizing the importance of engagement in resolving disputes. However, no official meeting has been scheduled at this time. Trump is scheduled to meet with delegates from nine Arab countries on Tuesday to address the war situation.

During a recent UN General Assembly address, President Trump outlined his stance on Iran, stating he is contemplating whether to negotiate a deal or confront Iran militarily. He believes the United States will reach an agreement with Iran after the midterm elections, as he is confident the nation will not withdraw from the decision-making process.

Trump dismissed the notion that the upcoming elections would influence his approach, asserting his intent to remain committed to resolving the crisis for the full duration of his term. He dismissed concerns about the election's impact on Iran's willingness to engage, asserting his resolve to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

The meeting also aims to address Iran's recent violation of a ceasefire by targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this breach, Trump asserted that the U.S. has successfully facilitated the passage of numerous oil tankers through the strait every night. He emphasized the necessity of united efforts in applying pressure on Iran, urging all countries to participate in a collective campaign against the Iranian regime.
