Appiatse redevelopment enters final phase with 69 new housing units

The Appiatse redevelopment project has entered its final phase, with the construction of 69 new housing units for families impacted by the January 2022 explosion. Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah officially marked the progress by cutting the sod, after completing the first two phases and securing additional land. The explosion, which occurred on January 20, 2022, resulted in 17 deaths, over 500 injuries, and significant destruction to homes, businesses, and livelihoods.

The first phase delivered 124 units, and the second phase included compensation for 50 households. Delays were experienced in acquiring extra land, but the government has now secured the necessary space for construction. The 69 new homes will come in six sizes, from one to six bedrooms, and incorporate green and sustainable features to promote environmental efficiency and community resilience.

Minister Buah highlighted the milestone as a beacon of hope for residents who have endured years of displacement, urging contractors to prioritize quality work. The Western Regional Coordinating Council expressed its commitment to facilitating the project's completion, working alongside the Ministry, Municipal Assembly, and local stakeholders to address challenges and maintain progress.

The final phase is projected to be finished within 12 to 14 months, bringing hope to Appiatse residents for the opportunity to return home and rebuild their lives.
