Altman and Amodei expected to join UN Security Council meeting about AI

Chinese AI company DeepSeek will join other firms in briefing the United Nations Security Council on the potential dangers of artificial intelligence this week, according to sources. The 15-member Security Council is set to discuss AI and international security on Wednesday, following a recent call from AI industry leaders for a coordinated slowdown in the development of increasingly powerful AI systems.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to brief the meeting, with senior representatives from Anthropic also anticipated to participate. DeepSeek and other Chinese AI firms, including Moonshot, have been invited to make statements, though DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng is not planning to attend as of now. The UN Security Council, responsible for maintaining international peace and security, held its first meeting on AI risks in 2023, with China warning against AI becoming a runaway technology and the US cautioning against its use for censorship or repression.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently warned that rapidly advancing AI poses risks that cannot be ignored, clashing with US President Donald Trump's stance on existing safeguards being sufficient. Chinese state media have dismissed calls for AI development slowdown as part of a Cold War playbook aimed at maintaining US dominance in cutting-edge technology and excluding China from global AI governance.

Unlike leaders of US AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, Chinese model developers have rarely discussed the possibility of AI systems deceiving humans, evading control, or causing catastrophic harm, and have been largely silent on these risks since the debate intensified in the US this month. US and Chinese officials are set to hold further talks on AI safety, following a meeting ahead of President Trump's scheduled talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.
