72nd National Film Awards: Where to watch for free with Mammootty, Kartik Aaryan and Yami Gautam

On Tuesday, 22 September, the 72nd National Film Awards will take place in Gujarat, marking the first time the ceremony has been held outside Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu will present the awards at Ekta Nagar, formerly Kevadia, with the Statue of Unity as a backdrop. The ceremony begins at 3pm India time, which is 1.30pm in the UAE. Viewers in the UAE can watch the live stream from 1.30pm UAE time on DD National's YouTube channel for free.

This year's awards ceremony is notable as it marks a shift in tradition. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken the event to Gujarat as part of their plan to rotate the ceremony between different states in future editions, embodying the concept of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat - One India, Great India.

The winners were announced in July by an 11-member jury chaired by Malayalam filmmaker Jayaraj. Malayalam film Article 370 took Best Feature Film, with Yami Gautam winning Best Actress for her performance. Mammootty received two awards, one for Malayalam film Bramayugam, his fourth National Award, and another as Best Actor for the same film.

Kartik Aaryan won Best Actor for Hindi sports biopic Chandu Champion. Tamil film Amaran also received several honours, including Best Direction, Best Music, and Best Editing. Other notable winners include Kalki 2898 AD for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, Randeep Hooda for Best Debut Director, Sukumar for Best Screenplay, Stree 2 for Best Choreography, Srikanth for Best Hindi Film, Feminichi Fathima for Best Malayalam Film, and Sanjay Mishra for Best Supporting Actor.

Dhanush received a Special Mention, and veteran actor Anant Nag will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest official honour in cinema.
