3 US senators seek probe of US military AI failures

Three leading US senators have called for investigations into alleged artificial intelligence (AI) failures within American military and intelligence operations, expressing concerns that unreliable AI-generated data could result in lethal mistakes. Senators Mark Warner, Jack Reed, and Chris Coons requested unrestricted access to inspectors general to examine the reported incidents, citing public reports of AI targeting platforms relying on outdated geographical data during a kinetic strike in Minab, Iran, and an aborted military interdiction mission due to potential AI-generated errors in intelligence.

The senators emphasized that while AI can have beneficial roles in intelligence analysis, it must be subject to strict professional standards and human oversight, particularly when dealing with nuclear-armed adversaries. They criticized the administration's revocation of National Security Memorandum 25 and a Defense Department strategy that they claim undermines governance requirements in favor of rapid AI adoption, warning that such a "Move Fast and Break Things" approach could lead to grave operational miscalculations.
