Zelensky says he’ll meet Trump in New York as peace efforts pick up

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to meet US President Donald Trump in New York in the coming days, as efforts to revive peace negotiations surrounding the war in Ukraine intensify. The leaders are expected to discuss various matters during the meeting, which is scheduled to occur while both are present at the United Nations General Assembly.

Zelensky revealed on Telegram that a conversation had taken place between the two presidents by phone, during which they addressed a myriad of issues. He emphasized that a meeting in New York "could achieve a lot" due to the existing diplomatic momentum. Earlier this month, Zelensky engaged with US chief negotiator Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who were in Kiev for talks.

There are ongoing preparations to resume direct negotiations between Kiev and Moscow, mediated by the United States; Russia has stated that talks could recommence in October. The negotiations hit a dead end last winter and were subsequently halted during the Iran war.
