Without partners, Bersatu risks losing more Malay ground, say analysts

Analysts warn that the Bersatu party risks losing more ground among Malay voters in the upcoming general election (GE16) if it fails to find a new political partner. At the party's 10-year anniversary celebration, president Muhyiddin Yassin emphasized the party's inability to face the election alone and the necessity to choose allies based on its core principles.

However, experts have cautioned that Bersatu faces an uphill battle in securing such alliances, particularly with the expected coalition between Umno and PAS in several states. Syaza Shukri of International Islamic University Malaysia stated that Bersatu is struggling to compete with Umno and PAS on its own, especially in mixed demographic areas.

By forming partnerships with other parties, Bersatu could reduce competition among multiple factions and better consolidate support from voters who oppose Umno and PAS. She added that Bersatu should avoid harboring major political ambitions, as these could hinder a lasting alliance with potential partners. While Muhyiddin reassured members that the party would not compromise its principles in seeking allies, it remains unclear whether Bersatu can find a strong enough partner to boost its chances in the GE16.
