Who will vote for trees?

In July 2026, the small Quebec town of Terrasse-Vaudreuil made international headlines by passing a resolution that recognized the rights of trees. This resolution was based on a Universal Declaration of the Rights of Trees, which had been crafted in France. The town council made it clear that trees are living beings with the right to exist, thrive and receive protections under the law.

Mayor Michel Bordeau emphasized that trees are indispensable allies for the health, climate resilience and quality of life of the community. This idea, though anathema to some, resonated with many others who believe that trees, like all elements of the natural world, should be granted inalienable rights. In Winnipeg, a similar debate is taking place during the civic election, as Trees Please Winnipeg challenges candidates to sign the "Save the Shade" Pledge to protect mature trees and forests.

The city has been stalling for two years, citing the need for provincial charter changes, but similar clauses in Edmonton's charter led to the adoption of a private tree bylaw. In Winnipeg, more than 80 per cent of three million trees sit on privately owned land with no protection, while over 20 municipalities have already implemented private tree bylaws.
