Mersing, a coastal district in Malaysia, has been recognized as one of the country's happiest towns for 2026. Deiah Idris, a 67-year-old resident, attributes her happiness to the strong ties she shares with her family and neighbors. "I am happy because my family lives nearby, and many of my neighbours are also relatives," she shared with Bernama. "We often rent boats and go island-hopping together. It is really enjoyable."

Economic development and tourism contribute to Mersing's charm, drawing visitors eager to explore the islands, snorkel, dive, and bask in the coastal beauty of the area. However, the district's leaders prioritize maintaining a balance between progress and preserving the tranquillity residents cherish. District council president Abdul Karim Bakar explains that he aims to keep Mersing as it is, offering people the option to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by nature.

Economic considerations also play a role in the town's appeal. Small food businesses like keropok lekor sellers and homestays surrounded by greenery provide residents with opportunities to earn income while showcasing the town's unique lifestyle. Kluang and Simpang Renggam, other towns in the same district, offer additional quality of life benefits through public amenities, recreational spaces, and accessible transportation options, allowing residents to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

While Mersing does have some challenges, such as the need for road maintenance and efficient services, its residents appreciate the overall sense of well-being the town provides.
