We need a new mindset: Anwar Gargash calls for direct Arab-Iran dialogue to shape regional future

Dubai: Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, a key diplomat for the UAE, has called for a significant shift in how Arab nations and Iran communicate regarding the region's future, rejecting the idea that important strategic conversations should remain solely between Tehran and Washington. Speaking at an Al Monitor panel in New York just before the UN General Assembly's High-Level Week, Gargash advocated for a "new mindset" in interactions with Iran, emphasizing the need for a more open and balanced dialogue.

He explained that Iran often considers itself the dominant player in the region and often prefers to engage in major strategic talks with the US rather than its Arab neighbors. Gargash stressed the importance of discussing shared goals such as regional stability and development not just in an Iranian-American context, but also in an Iranian-Arab context.

The UAE and other countries might need to prepare for an unstable Iran in the foreseeable future, Gargash warned, noting that this does not necessarily involve a regime change in Tehran. The instability, compounded by factors like the Yemeni conflict and economic sanctions, could prolong the current crisis, he cautioned. However, Gargash argued that enhanced diplomatic engagement is crucial for navigating through these challenges.

His comments came as global leaders and senior officials convened in New York for the UN General Assembly, with Iran and broader regional security expected to be central topics in the diplomatic talks. Gargash, who reiterated the UAE's stance on deterrence and dialogue, also highlighted the premeditated nature of Iran's attacks on the UAE and other GCC countries, suggesting that rebuilding trust could take generations.

Iran must collaborate with GCC countries to find a political resolution to the ongoing conflict, Gargash stressed.
