Uzbek master artist sees new prospects for Qatar - Uzbekistan artistic exchange

Uzbek master artist Davlat Toshev sees promising opportunities for cultural exchange between his homeland, Uzbekistan, and the nation of Qatar. Currently serving as an artist-in-residence at Qatar’s Museum of Islamic Art, Toshev outlined the potential for joint exhibitions, artist exchanges, educational programs, and research initiatives that could benefit both countries’ rich artistic heritages.

Toshev highlighted how Uzbekistan’s centuries-old traditions of miniature painting, calligraphy, and manuscript art could complement Qatar’s extensive cultural infrastructure, including museums and residency programs, to introduce traditional arts to contemporary audiences. “Uzbekistan carries centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship, of miniature painting, calligraphy and the art of the manuscript, while Qatar has built remarkable international platforms — museums, residencies and cultural initiatives — that carry heritage for the global audience,” he said.

The artist emphasized that such collaboration could open doors for joint exhibitions, artist exchanges, master-apprentice programs, and collaborative research, generating mutual benefits for the cultural and artistic communities of both nations. Both Uzbekistan and Qatar share deep historical roots and a profound reverence for art and culture, providing a strong foundation for fruitful cooperation.

Toshev noted that experiencing his heritage within a different cultural setting deepened his appreciation of its uniqueness and worth.

During his stay in Qatar, Toshev also met with artists, researchers, and professionals from diverse backgrounds, providing valuable opportunities for cross-cultural exchange. He remarked on how encounters with such diversity often reveal the true uniqueness and value of one’s own heritage.

Reflecting on Qatar’s unique blend of tradition and modernity, Toshev expressed admiration for how the nation honors its historical roots while embracing contemporary art and international dialogue. He expressed hope to return to Uzbekistan with new collaborations and creative ideas, particularly focused on how to present Bukhara miniature painting to contemporary audiences worldwide.

“I now see Bukhara miniature painting not merely as a national heritage belonging to Uzbekistan, but as a living part of humanity’s shared cultural memory,” he stated.

Toshev emphasized that his experience in Qatar has given him a new perspective on his own artistic practice, allowing him to step away from daily routines and gain deeper reflection on his work and the traditions he carries forward. He emphasized that preserving tradition should not mean confining it to the past, but creating a living connection between heritage, the present, and the future.
