US to open 2 new military bases in Greenland

The United States intends to establish two new military installations in Greenland, according to an agreement set to be signed by the US, Denmark, and Greenland on Tuesday. The deal, to be announced at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City at 10:30 AM ET (14:30 GMT), aims to enhance Arctic security under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) framework, rather than under the sole control of the US and Denmark.

The two sites under consideration are Narsarsuaq, a former Cold War-era military base with a population dwindling to a few dozen residents since the US closure of Bluie West One in the 1950s, and Mestersvig, currently utilized by the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, a Danish special forces unit. Both locations have not yet been confirmed as final sites, pending finalization of the agreement's details.

The US, led by President Donald Trump, has long expressed interest in controlling Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, with threats of military or economic force surfacing as recently as January. These threats escalated diplomatic tensions within NATO, prompting Denmark and Greenland to engage in negotiations with Washington to mitigate the pressure. Following these negotiations, the US plans to reopen Narsarsuaq and establish a military presence at Mestersvig, marking a shift in the island's military landscape.
