US sounds Iran alarm, urges citizens to leave

The United States has issued a travel warning for Iran, advising American citizens not to visit the country and urging those already there to depart immediately. American citizens are instructed to remain vigilant and monitor developments affecting airports and border crossings.

The alert follows escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, with Washington maintaining military and maritime pressure on Tehran. Iranian-backed Houthi forces have targeted Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports, raising the risk of further escalation in West Asia. The US also warned of the potential for retaliatory attacks against US interests and advised citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for security updates.

The State Department also issued a separate alert for Americans in Saudi Arabia, requiring government employees to obtain special authorization for travel to certain areas due to heightened security concerns following Houthi attacks. Saudi-led coalition forces intercepted a ballistic missile and reported attempted attacks on civilian populations and infrastructure in various locations.

Qatar condemned the Houthi attacks and expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia, deeming the strikes a violation of the kingdom's sovereignty and international law. The US State Department urged Americans traveling to or through West Asia to remain vigilant due to the heightened risks of disruptions and attacks.
