UNGA: ‘Nigeria fully represented’ – FG clears air on Tinubu’s absence

The Nigerian government has addressed concerns surrounding the absence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Following public commentary, the government clarified that Vice President Kashim Shettima was mandated by the President to represent him and lead Nigeria's delegation at the event.

The Vice President will deliver Nigeria's national statement and engage in high-level meetings with world leaders, international organizations, and development partners. This delegation will effectively represent Nigeria throughout the high-level session, with the Vice President carrying the full mandate of the President and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The government emphasized that Tinubu's annual leave is unrelated to his absence, stating that his decision to entrust the Vice President with this responsibility is neither unusual nor a reflection on Nigeria's diplomatic standing. The government also addressed recent criticisms from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a US-based lobbying organization, urging them to refrain from presenting speculation as established facts and to exercise responsibility in discussing matters affecting Nigeria's international relationships and national reputation.

The government further highlighted Nigeria's strong relationship with the United States, encompassing various sectors such as trade, security cooperation, energy, democratic institutions, regional stability, and people-to-people ties. These ties are maintained through established diplomatic channels and should not be confused with partisan commentary or the activities of private lobbying organizations.

The Nigerian government expressed its commitment to fully representing the country in New York, advancing its interests, and continuing efforts to strengthen its relationships with international partners.
