UK’s Burnham heads to US with pragmatism in mind for Trump meeting

The former mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, is set to travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly on Monday. This marks his first major diplomatic appearance since becoming Britain's seventh prime minister in the past decade. Burnham, who has limited experience in foreign affairs, plans to approach his meetings with a pragmatic mindset, differing from his predecessor, Keir Starmer, who made efforts to win over US President Donald Trump.

During his first interview after assuming office, Burnham emphasized his willingness to disagree with Trump if it serves Britain's interests. In a recent meeting with world leaders, he reiterated his call for increased air defence support to protect Ukraine from Russian bombardment. This appeal, made in Kyiv last month, includes requesting US Patriot systems.

Kim Darroch, a former UK ambassador to Washington, believes Trump will want the meeting with Burnham to go smoothly, despite any tensions with other leaders, such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Darroch noted that Burnham's personable nature and charisma may help them bond, as Trump tends to prioritize personal chemistry over ideological differences.

Burnham has had at least two cordial conversations with Trump since his ascension to power, with his team highlighting that Trump did not object to Britain's stance on banning imports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. This move aligns with Britain standing for certain values and asserting its position amid growing great-power rivalry.

However, Burnham will be cautious in navigating his relationship with Trump, his team assures. He aims to maintain the "special relationship" with the US through pragmatic decisions that benefit the nation. As Washington urges NATO countries to contribute more to the alliance, Burnham has expressed his desire to increase defense spending and investment, job creation, and address a potential funding gap in Britain's Defence Investment Plan.
