Ukraine's oil and gas giant to build storage sites in Hungary amid fears of Russian winter strikes

Ukraine's leading energy firm Naftogaz has entered into an agreement with Hungary's Mol energy company to construct oil storage facilities in Hungary, according to Naftogaz's acting head Serhii Fedorenko. This announcement comes in light of Ukraine's anticipated surge of Russian drone and missile assaults on the nation's energy infrastructure during the upcoming winter season.

Fedorenko emphasized on Facebook that the creation of supplementary storage capacity and diversification of supply routes, situated beyond the zones targeted by attacks, is crucial for market stability. The planned facilities are intended to cater to Ukraine's requirements while simultaneously fortifying beneficial cross-border energy infrastructure.

The memorandum was inked during the inaugural Carpathian 8 Summit, which was held in Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, a fresh platform for economic collaboration among nations in the Carpathian region. Relations between Ukraine and its European Union neighbor Hungary have experienced a limited thaw since Hungary's pro-European Prime Minister Peter Magyar assumed office in May, following the departure of Viktor Orban, who was closely aligned with the Kremlin.

Although Magyar has dismissed the idea of providing military assistance to Ukraine or expediting Kyiv's EU membership process, he has demonstrated a willingness to mend strained ties and foster a more cooperative relationship with Ukraine.
