UK prosecutors charge first person for Rwanda genocide

Vincent Brown, a 65-year-old man, has become the first individual in the United Kingdom to face charges related to the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The UK Crown Prosecution Service announced on Monday that Brown, who is currently in custody, has been charged with one count of being an ancillary to genocide and six offenses of aiding crimes against humanity.

Prosecutors allege that Brown directed and incited acts of murder and genocide committed against the Tutsi during the 100-day period of violence in Rwanda. The case, which involved a seven-year investigation, demonstrates the UK's commitment to holding individuals accountable for international crimes, according to Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London.

Brown, who was previously known as Vincent Bajinya, was born in Kigali, Rwanda, but has been residing in Islington, London. This marks the first time the UK has brought charges in connection with the genocide, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 800,000 people.
