UK PM Burnham agrees to Saudi request for refuelling support

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced on Monday that he had agreed to Saudi Arabia's request for defensive air-to-air refuelling support, aimed at stabilising the broader Middle East region. The support comes after the Houthis, who hold sway over Yemen's largest population centers, ramped up their assaults on Saudi Arabia, adding to the conflict that began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran late February.

Speaking en route to New York for a United Nations General Assembly meeting, Burnham said the decision to provide the defensive refuelling was a response to Riyadh's appeal, guided by the advice of the defence and foreign secretaries. "Because of course Saudi Arabia has been experiencing attacks ... and we need to keep those pathways open, and hence our agreement to the request," the Prime Minister explained.

The UK and Saudi Arabia share a long-standing military alliance, with Britain being one of the kingdom's primary arms suppliers. This year, Britain dispatched its Sky Sabre air defence system to Saudi Arabia to bolster its defenses against Iranian missile strikes during the conflict with Iran. For the new air-to-air refuelling arrangement, Britain will deploy a single Voyager aircraft in the coming days.

Burnham noted that this assistance would be provided on a time-limited basis, but reiterated that Britain was "playing our part" in the Middle East by supporting efforts to maintain the Strait of Hormuz open.
