UK joins call for limiting UN Security Council vetoes

The United Kingdom has joined a global push to limit the use of vetoes by permanent members of the United Nations Security Council during discussions about mass atrocities like genocide. The initiative, initially proposed by Mexico and France in 2015, currently has the support of 128 countries, falling one short of the two-thirds majority required for it to become binding.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco highlighted the importance of the Security Council maintaining its role in preserving international peace and security if the resolution garners the necessary support. While the proposed resolution remains non-binding even with the majority backing, the move by the UK and other nations aims to make it more challenging for veto-wielding permanent members, including France, the UK, Russia, China, and the United States, to utilize their veto power in cases of pressing emergencies.
