UAE to call for global co-operation in combatting crime at UN congress

The 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice will convene from September 26 to October 1 in Abu Dhabi, marking its first appearance in the UAE. The forum will focus on addressing technology-driven offences and emerging forms of financial, environmental, cyber, and organized crime, which necessitate enhanced international cooperation. This event will culminate in the Abu Dhabi Declaration, a UAE-led roadmap for international efforts to combat crime in the years ahead.

Over 97 countries, comprising more than 32 justice and interior ministers, are expected to attend the congress. Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice, emphasized that the congress aligns with the evolving challenges and conflicts that have impacted the security and stability of nations. The event will feature more than 93 experts, 15 major events, approximately 200 meetings, and 38 specialized exhibitions.

Al Nuaimi highlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence and emerging technology on criminal justice systems, noting that while technology can enhance crime prevention and law enforcement, it also introduces legal and ethical dilemmas. He stressed that the UAE aims to transition from diagnosing challenges to developing solutions, fostering partnerships, and crafting actionable pathways with measurable impact.

Dr Hatem Fouad, regional representative for the Gulf region at the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, stated that the congress is timely as security challenges persist globally. He emphasized that the congress will serve as a platform for countries to collaborate in addressing organized crime and terrorism, as criminals increasingly utilize technology, AI, travel, and global supply chains for their illicit activities.

Fouad noted that the UAE's contribution to implementing the Abu Dhabi Declaration would position the country as a leader in advancing global crime prevention and strengthening criminal justice systems. The congress, which began in 1955, is the UN's premier global forum for discussing crime prevention, criminal justice, and the rule of law.
