Typhoon approaches eastern Japan, prompting flood and landslide warnings

A powerful typhoon, named Dujuan, is expected to make landfall on Japan's eastern coast on Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned. This tropical storm is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to the Kanto region, which encompasses Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. The JMA has issued flood and landslide warnings for this area, a region already grappling with the impact of torrential rain.

The typhoon has already brought torrential downpours to parts of the Izu Islands, Chiba Prefecture, and other Pacific coastal zones. Some locations have recorded more than 300 mm (12 inches) of rain since Saturday. Conditions are expected to worsen as the typhoon approaches Tokyo later on Monday.

In response to the impending threat, the equestrian eventing competition at the Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture has been postponed until Tuesday. Authorities have cautioned that linear rain bands could develop over Kanto and central Japan, significantly increasing the risk of flash floods and other rain-related disasters. These bands, which have become a growing concern in recent years, can unleash enormous amounts of rain over a narrow area for several hours.
