‘Trust before training’: How to help a rescued dog settle into your home

India's stray and rescued dogs present a complex issue encompassing public health, animal welfare, and municipal administration. According to a 2019 census, there are an estimated 203.31 lakh stray dogs and cattle across the nation. Sanjana Sharma of K9 Coach explains that rescuing a dog heralds a new chapter—one for the animal and its new family.

Sanjana emphasizes, "India has consistently demonstrated the depth of its compassion for dogs, uniting people in their welfare." Simple acts like providing water, food, assistance during injury, and ensuring the well-being of dogs around us exemplify this compassion. Malabica Chakraborty, Founder of Wagging Tales Foundation, advises against forcing interactions with rescued dogs, instead recommending allowing them to acclimate at their own pace.

Once a dog feels secure, a thorough health check is conducted to identify any immediate health concerns, after which they are provided with a clean living space, fresh water, nutritious meals, and necessary medical treatment. Positive reinforcement—rewarding desired behaviors with treats, praise, or affection—proves to be an effective training method, focusing on gradually introducing simple commands like sit, stay, come, and leave. Socialization should occur at the dog's own pace, involving controlled exposure to people, other dogs, and new environments to build confidence.

For dogs displaying aggression, extreme fear, or separation anxiety, professional behavioral guidance is recommended. Responsible coexistence entails respecting neighbors by keeping the environment clean after feeding, ensuring the safety of both people and other animals in shared spaces.
