Trump Says He Will Appoint a New AI Adviser, Without Providing Details

In a recent social media post, U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to appoint a new artificial intelligence adviser and establish an "AI force." However, the president did not provide further details about these initiatives or how they would be executed. Concerns are mounting among lawmakers in Washington regarding the potential risks posed by AI technology to both humans and property.

Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic researcher, recently warned that individuals developing AI are convinced it could lead to human extinction by the end of the decade. Despite these warnings, Trump has consistently dismissed AI-related concerns and advocated against additional regulations, stating that he "will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry."

Instead, he intends to "cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!" If the president follows through on this pledge, it would be his second AI czar. The previous appointee, venture capitalist David Sacks, resigned earlier this spring and now operates as an external advisor. Sacks shares Trump's skepticism towards new AI regulations, contending that developers should be held accountable for their products' safety and could face liability if issues arise.

He believes that federal rules are unnecessary. The White House has not yet commented on Trump's post. This announcement arrives on the eve of Trump's anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Both nations are vying for dominance in artificial intelligence, viewing it as crucial to their economic and military prowess.

Trump and prominent technology executives argue that excessive regulation would hinder U.S. AI development and hinder American companies' competitiveness against Chinese counterparts. This assertion is often contested by safety advocates.
