Trump says he wants potash from Belarus for ‘subtantially less’ than Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform that the United States is working on a deal to purchase potash from Belarus for substantially less than the current cost from Canada. This news comes as a relief to farmers and ranchers. Trump emphasized that the pricing would be significantly lower than what the U.S. currently pays to Canada.

However, European officials have criticized Belarus for being "an accomplice" to Russia's war in Ukraine. In recent years, Belarus has even participated in joint military drills with Russia, practicing the use of nuclear weapons stationed in their territory. Potash, a vital input for fertilizers, is essential for supporting plant growth, boosting crop yield, and enhancing disease resistance.

Canada is currently the world's leading exporter of potash, accounting for 79% of the U.S. imports. Russia and Belarus follow in second and fourth place, respectively, with Belarus contributing 3% of U.S. potash imports. There are no substitutes for potash in the agriculture industry, making it critical for food security. The U.S. and Canada had suspended trade talks last month due to last-minute demands by the U.S., including restrictions on Canada entering new trade agreements with other nations.

Since then, Trump has imposed multiple rounds of tariffs and import restrictions against Canada. Belarus is described as an "authoritarian state" with severely restricted civil liberties, according to the Washington-based Freedom House. The country scored seven out of 100 on their freedom index, compared to Canada's score of 97.
