Torrevieja Sports City Set for Major Modernisation

The Torrevieja Council in Spain has approved a tender for a major modernization project at the Municipal Sports City. The project aims to transform the athletics stadium and create a new outdoor arena for beach sports, as well as refurbish existing facilities. Planned improvements include a new grandstand with a timing tower, refurbished seating and changing rooms, upgraded storage and multipurpose rooms beneath the grandstand, improved drainage, and modern LED floodlighting.

Additionally, a multi-sport sand arena will be built for year-round beach football, beach volleyball, and beach handball activities. The construction project is provisionally estimated to cost €3.025 million, including VAT. A separate contract worth €81,000 will be awarded for preparing detailed technical plans, which must be completed within six months of signing the contract.

Sports councillor Diana Box stated that the scheme aims to meet growing demand and modernize facilities that are more than 30 years old. The improvements focus on accessibility, safety, energy efficiency, and functionality. The construction will address water pooling near the stands by enhancing drainage, install a new perimeter fence on the eastern side, and replace the existing lighting system with LED floodlighting towers.

The sand-sports complex will occupy the site of a former seven-a-side football pitch, with new sand courts, a retaining wall, and fencing to be installed after clearing and preparing the area. Three existing lighting towers will be retained, and a fourth LED-equipped tower added. Surrounding paths, paved areas, landscaping, green spaces, and street furniture will be reorganized to integrate the development with the wider Sports City.

The final construction cost and precise scope will be confirmed once the technical project is completed.
