This App Turns Your Study Material Into a TikTok-Style Learning Feed

A fresh application, ScrollEd, can transform text files, including PDFs and textbooks, into a scrollable feed reminiscent of Instagram Reels and TikTok. The app converts the material into AI-generated videos, audio, text, and interactive quizzes. Users swipe up to navigate to a new topic or slide sideways for a deeper exploration of the current subject.

A quiz concludes each segment. ScrollEd is a Palo Alto-based startup co-founded in 2023 by Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff. Both founders, students, discovered their dissatisfaction with doomscrolling before bedtime, prompting the creation of the app. Younger users, according to Gupta, are now more inclined towards short-form, vertical feeds, posing challenges for media and educational content requiring deeper engagement.

ScrollEd aims to cater to users accustomed to vertical feeds while avoiding the practice of maximizing engagement for its own benefit. The app integrates seamlessly as a supplementary "scroll" medium. ScrollEd supports individual users, educational institutions, and corporate training programs. The consumer model is freemium, with a free feed and a paid ScrollEd Pro subscription for institutions.

Educational bodies can license learning material for distribution, obtaining engagement and progress reports. ScrollEd is set to launch its consumer service at TechCrunch Disrupt in October, with plans to extend its lesson library, implement source-checking workflows, and pilot programs with institutions. The company aspires to construct a social network optimized for users' well-being.
