These MLB sluggers are chasing an ugly record. Will history be made this week?

Kyle Schwarber and Colson Montgomery of the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox respectively are on the verge of breaking an unattractive record in Major League Baseball. Both sluggers have struck out 216 times this season, putting them in direct competition with Mark Reynolds' all-time record of 223 strikeouts, which he established in 2009.

Despite the looming threat to Reynolds' record, neither Schwarber nor Montgomery appears concerned. Montgomery explained to reporters, "Guys who strike out a lot, you see them, but what do they also do? They hit a lot of homers and drive a lot of guys in." Noteworthy: Montgomery is making history for the first time, as this will be his third 200-strikeout season.

In contrast, Schwarber has achieved this feat twice before. Both teams find themselves in pivotal moments as the MLB season concludes. The Phillies are in a tight race for a national league wild card spot, while the White Sox are closely contesting the American League Central championship. Consequently, both teams will likely see a substantial number of plate appearances in the remaining games.
