The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence

The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI) has been formed at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA, and online. This group aims to advise AI companies on their interactions with mathematical research and the mathematical community. Their purpose is to support the long-term prospects for deep human understanding of mathematics and to serve as a communication channel between mathematicians and the AI industry.

Members of AGMAI include Françoise Charles, Camillo De Lellis, Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer, Nikhil Srivastava, Ulrike Tillmann, Ravi Vakil, Edward Witten, and Melanie Matchett Wood. They operate independently of any AI company and do not accept payment for their work. Recommendations will be published on their website and offered to any AI company that impacts mathematics significantly. However, they have no decision-making power at any AI company.

AGMAI was established after OpenAI approached some of its members to create an external advisory board. Currently, they are focusing on advising OpenAI on coordinating the release of significant mathematical results produced by their internal model. They welcome input from the mathematical community and invite responses through a provided form. These responses will inform their recommendations and will not be made public without the respondents' approval.
