Thane Ganeshotsav: Maharashtra Sports Club Unveils Eco-Friendly 'Gajraj Mahal' With Education Initiative

On September 21, 2026, the Maharashtra Sports Club in Uthalsar, Thane, made waves with the unveiling of a fictional replica of Gajraj Mahal for this year's Ganeshotsav celebrations. The 54th public Ganeshotsav since its establishment by Janardan Vaiti, the club remains dedicated to serving the community through various educational, social, and cultural initiatives.

Crafted entirely from eco-friendly materials, the artistic display features 16 intricately carved elephant faces, or Gajmukh, and is adorned with a monochrome grey aesthetic to promote Warli folk art traditions. The set also includes towering structures, vibrant chandeliers, and cultural awareness campaigns that emphasize the preservation of the Marathi language and local heritage.

To address concerns about noise and air pollution during the immersion procession, organizers have chosen to prohibit high-decibel DJ systems, Dhol-Tasha groups, and gulal. Instead, the mandal will conduct a serene, traditional immersion ceremony accompanied by the soothing sounds of brass bands, Taal, and Mridangam.

In addition to the eco-friendly celebration focus, the club has initiated a novel educational outreach program for visiting devotees. The club requests visitors to donate a notebook and a pen instead of traditional offerings such as flowers, fruits, and coconuts. President Yogesh Bhandari revealed that all collected stationery will be supplemented and distributed by the club to primary schools in tribal belts within Thane and Palghar districts.
