Takaichi to Announce Plan to Aid Gulf Nations at U.N.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is set to unveil a plan at the U.N. General Assembly in New York aimed at bolstering the economic and energy resilience of Gulf nations amidst the Middle East crisis, according to government sources. Takaichi will highlight the importance of advancing AI as a security concern, tackling disinformation and misinformation, and elevating Japan to the global forefront of disaster prevention.

This will be Takaichi's inaugural speech at the United Nations since assuming office. With Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the Iran situation, Takaichi will emphasize the strain on the international order and reaffirm Japan's commitment to fulfilling its UN responsibilities. She will also showcase Japan's achievements in spearheading the POWERR Asia framework, a financial support system for energy procurement.

The plan for cooperation with Gulf nations could involve constructing pipelines to circumvent the Strait of Hormuz or providing financial assistance to Middle Eastern countries. Takaichi will advocate for stricter measures against the proliferation of disinformation and misinformation due to AI's security implications and potential.

She will also announce Japan's intent to host an AI summit to fortify global cooperation on the responsible use of AI. Japan aims to host the summit in 2028 following four previous editions. In light of worldwide natural disasters, Takaichi will pledge Japan's leadership in disaster preparedness, including hosting the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in October.

Lastly, Takaichi will stress the compatibility of climate change measures with economic growth and emphasize Japan's dedication to advancing global efforts through the dissemination of its advanced energy-saving technologies.
