Shettima: At UNGA, Nigeria Will Be Guided By National Interest, Multilateralism, Reform Agenda

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has affirmed that Nigeria's participation in the current 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York will be centered on the nation's national interests, the principle of multilateralism, and President Bola Tinubu's persistent advocacy for reforms in global institutions. Addressing reporters upon his arrival in New York, Shettima emphasized Nigeria's stance: "Our message in New York is clear.

Nigeria believes in multilateralism, but the institutions that govern our world must become more representative, equitable, and responsive to today's realities." The vice-president's focus will be on advancing President Tinubu's call for a global system that provides developing countries with a stronger voice and fair opportunities for prosperity.

Accompanied by Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, State Minister for Budget and Economic Planning Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, and other high-ranking officials, Shettima arrived in New York where he was greeted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice-President) Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Women Affairs Minister Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Solid Mineral Development Minister Chief Dele Alake, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, and several other senior government and diplomatic delegates.

During the general debate, Shettima will present Nigeria's national statement, articulating the country's viewpoints on critical international issues and priorities with significant impacts on peace and security, development, economic growth, and global cooperation. Additionally, he will engage in high-level meetings and bilateral discussions with world leaders, international organizations, and development partners during the General Assembly.

Nigeria's engagements aim to bolster its positions on international financial architecture reform, sustainable development, climate finance, technology accessibility, and enhanced representation for Africa in global decision-making.
