Apple's newest iPhone 18 Pro series has caught the attention of teardown experts at iFixit, revealing several intriguing updates compared to the previous year's model. While the software remains largely unchanged, the mechanical camera aperture and thermal redesign stand out as notable improvements, potentially impacting buyers' decisions.

For the first time, Apple's flagship smartphones come equipped with a variable aperture system. Inspired by Samsung's earlier experiments, this mechanism utilizes six minuscule aperture blades that physically adjust to regulate the amount of light reaching the camera sensor. Each blade is thinner than a human hair and relies on precise spacing to move in unison, achieving near-perfect synchronization with virtually no room for error.

This engineering marvel raises questions about the balance between advanced technology and potential reliability issues.

While the variable aperture promises enhanced photographic capabilities, there is a catch. If any of these delicate blades were to malfunction or become stuck, the entire camera assembly would likely need replacement—an expensive proposition. However, iFixit assures that swapping out the camera module is a straightforward process, albeit requiring careful handling.

Another serviceable component in the iPhone 18 Pro series is the battery, which also proves relatively easy to replace. However, accessing the battery may prove more challenging due to the back glass panel being glued in place, with the exception of the wireless charging coil. In the majority of iFixit's test cases, the plastic frame around the display shattered during removal, underscoring the fragility of these components.

In a departure from previous iterations, Apple has incorporated a custom packaging method that positions the A20 Pro silicon die adjacent to the memory. This arrangement effectively severs the memory's connection to the thermal path, allowing the SoC to directly interface with the vapor chamber cooling system. Apple claims this redesign facilitates up to a 40% improvement in sustained performance over its predecessor.
