Sabah’s power supply network improved under state regulatory control, says CM

Chief Minister Hajiji Noor of Sabah has stated that the state's power supply network has seen significant improvements since the government took over regulatory control for electricity and renewable energy in 2024. Previously, applications for approvals took four to five years to be processed by the federal Energy Commission, but now the process is faster as the state can handle it independently.

During a meeting of the Sabah Energy Council, Hajiji emphasized that the generation reserve in Sabah is projected to reach 26% by the end of the year, up from 8% in 2024 to 19% as of August this year. He also reported that the System Average Interruption Duration Index has declined from 598 minutes in 2023 to 226 minutes as of July this year, indicating better reliability in the power supply.

These advancements, Hajiji attributes to ongoing efforts to enhance the grid system. In 2024, he noted that Sabah's power supply challenges were primarily due to a surge in demand from new investors and businesses establishing operations in the state. He stressed that comprehensive strategies are needed to further bolster Sabah's energy sector, including ensuring the reliability of transmission and distribution infrastructure.
