Russia launched more than 2,000 drones at Ukraine over past week, Zelensky says

Over the past week, Russia launched more than 2,000 attack drones at Ukraine, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. These drones, which are primarily jet-powered and capable of speeds up to 600 kilometers per hour, were accompanied by 1,700 air bombs and 19 missiles of various types. Zelensky stated that every day and night, Ukraine is defending itself against Russian attacks, with targets including monasteries, critical infrastructure, businesses, and residential buildings.

Zelensky's announcement of the drone strikes comes as Russia intensifies its bombardment tactics, with near-hourly drone attacks occurring throughout the day, alongside ongoing large-scale strikes. The president highlighted Ukraine's shortage of critical air defense missiles and systems, which has allowed Russia to exploit this vulnerability.

In August, at least 372 civilians were killed and 2,349 injured in Ukraine, marking the second-highest monthly death toll in 2026, surpassed only by July. In response to the attacks, Zelensky approved new long-range operations on September 19, though the specifics were not disclosed. Earlier in July, Zelensky claimed that Ukraine could strike over 3,000 kilometers inside Russia.

On September 20, Ukraine conducted its largest drone and missile attack yet, resulting in a significant fire in Moscow on the final day of Russia's parliamentary elections. Zelensky continued to urge foreign aid to bolster defense efforts, emphasizing the need for new sanctions against Russia and the pursuit of peace through strength.

The U.S. State Department approved a potential $2.7 billion sale of air defense systems and related equipment to Ukraine, including S-300 Clone and GAM-67 missiles, radar systems, laser-guided air defense systems, counter-drone radars, and mobile launcher modification kits. Zelensky expressed optimism about a potential meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly, seeing diplomatic momentum in their conversation.
