Riverbank protection project brings relief to Kampung Pulau Pisang residents

Kota Baru: Residents of Kampung Pulau Pisang have found relief after a federal riverbank protection project was implemented, ending years of severe erosion issues. Village head Zainab Deraman reported that erosion worsened in December, affecting most areas along the Kelantan River, with some experiencing significant bank collapses.

The situation impacted fishermen, who had to avoid unsafe sea conditions and saw several houses affected by erosion. However, the riverbank protection project, which began two months ago, has provided much-needed reassurance to residents. Self-employed Mohd Azmi Mohamed Abdul Ghani expressed his gratitude, stating that the project had given him and others peace of mind as the monsoon season approached.

Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department director Farhan Sufyan Borhan noted that while several areas along the Kelantan and Golok rivers remained at risk of erosion and landslides, particularly near settlements, the risks were based on past incidents. He emphasized that previous incidents showed the locations remained vulnerable, and the possibility of similar events occurring again could not be ruled out.

Farhan highlighted the department's focus on raising public awareness to ensure residents near vulnerable areas know safety measures to take during emergencies.
