Resurgent Acosta beats Martin for maiden MotoGP win in Austria

Pedro Acosta secured his inaugural MotoGP triumph in the Austrian Grand Prix, overcoming a crash in the sprint race to outpace world champion Jorge Martin at KTM's home venue, the Red Bull Ring circuit. The 22-year-old Spaniard, who started third on the grid before colliding during the preceding sprint event, took the lead on lap nine and maintained his advantage throughout the 28-lap contest.

Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi secured second place, while Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura finished fourth. For Acosta, a known as "The Shark," the victory marked a significant moment in his career, having achieved success in Moto3 and Moto2 before entering MotoGP with high expectations. He expressed his joy at winning with KTM, who currently lead the team standings.

Martin, the 2024 MotoGP champion, fell behind Bezzecchi on lap two but fought back, reclaiming the lead at Turn Three. Despite his efforts, Acosta's faster pace ultimately proved decisive, pushing him ahead on lap nine. Martin congratulated Acosta on his achievement, acknowledging the hard work the 22-year-old has put in over the past few years.

The win places Acosta third in the championship standings, 12 points behind leader Martin, who now boasts 306 points. Italian Marco Bezzecchi occupies third place with 264 points. Meanwhile, reigning champion Marc Marquez, who qualified second, struggled with his Ducati and finished fifth, leaving him 12 points adrift of Martin.
