Pope Leo calls for AI that strengthens peace efforts

Pope Leo has called for the creation of AI systems that promote peace and unity, rather than exacerbate conflicts and divisions within society. Speaking at a conference on AI issues in Rome, the pontiff emphasized the importance of developing Artificial Intelligence in a manner that respects the dignity of every individual and strengthens the bonds that connect humanity.

As the first US-born pope, Pope Leo has made addressing the potential risks of AI development a central focus of his papacy, which began 16 months ago. In his initial major document, released in May, he cautioned that AI systems could spread misinformation and prioritize conflict. To tackle this issue, the pontiff urged for international regulation of the AI industry.

Today's conference, hosted by Rome's Pontifical Lateran University, is titled "AI4Peace" and features speakers such as US economist Jeffrey Sachs, Rome city council president Svetlana Celli, and Francisco Rojas Aravena, the rector of the UN's University for Peace in Costa Rica. The brief message from Pope Leo was read aloud by Rev Andrea Ciucci, chancellor of the Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life.
