Patients Left To Choose Between Emergency And Trauma Units At AIIMS Bhopal

Patients at AIIMS Bhopal are finding themselves in a dilemma, having to choose between the emergency medicine section and the trauma centre. This separation was implemented about eight months ago with the intention of reducing the patient load on doctors. However, this decision has led to delays in critical care and operational inefficiencies at the hospital.

Dr. Vikash Gupta, the medical superintendent of AIIMS Bhopal, explained that patients now decide which unit they want to go to before arriving at AIIMS. This change has caused confusion as to where patients should be directed for treatment.

Trauma patients require immediate and concurrent interventions to manage bleeding and other critical issues. Dr. Amit Prayadarshi, who recently left the trauma centre, highlighted that separating the emergency medicine unit from the trauma centre has increased the risk of misclassification. This situation, where severely injured patients are mistakenly sent to standard emergency beds instead of active trauma units, can be life-threatening.

While the initial objective was to decrease the patient load on doctors, the current situation has become worse. The separation of these two crucial units has resulted in delayed access to essential facilities, such as CT scans, which can ultimately increase the risk of early mortality for critically injured patients.
