Paramount-Warner merger moves closer to completion

California Attorney General Rob Bonta reached a settlement with Paramount in a lawsuit challenging the $81 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, clearing the path for the acquisition to proceed. The deal would consolidate two major Hollywood studios, including key networks such as CBS and CNN, and streaming services like HBO Max and Paramount+.

Paramount would be required to increase domestic production and ensure editorial independence for its news operations. The settlement is awaiting final court approval, though Bonta emphasized that it is not a vote of support for the merger. The coalition of states, including California and New York, had sued to block the merger, claiming it would stifle competition and limit consumer choices.

The Writers Guild of America also filed a complaint, leading to an antitrust trial originally set to begin in March. Paramount initially contested the allegations but agreed to delay the transaction while the case progressed through the courts. The settlement came as critics warned of potential job losses and increased costs for consumers in an industry already dominated by a few major players.
