Paramount settles with US states in step towards merger with Warner Bros

Paramount has settled a dispute with a coalition of U.S. states, paving the way for its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, officials announced on Monday. This merger will result in a consolidated media conglomerate encompassing television, news, and cinema divisions. Paramount CEO David Ellison, whose affluent family maintains close connections to U.S. President Donald Trump, emerged victorious in a bidding war against Netflix in February to secure control over a portfolio of assets, including Warner Bros.

In June, the Trump administration endorsed the deal, one of the most significant media consolidations in recent years, without requiring any modifications to the transaction's operational structure. Prior to the approval, 12 U.S. states initiated legal proceedings to impede the merger.

The financial backing for this acquisition reportedly comprises roughly $24 billion in equity investments from the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. Notably, David Ellison's father, Larry Ellison, the billionaire co-founder of Oracle, also contributed funding and a loan guarantee. Critics within the entertainment industry contend that the newly formed entity could result in substantial job cuts in an already struggling Hollywood landscape and diminish the annual output of cinematic productions.
